Access faults are traced from the device backwards rather than from the gate outwards. Power and voltage are measured at the device, not at the panel. Wiring is tested end to end rather than inspected, since the faults are usually inside insulation or under ground. Cellular entry replacement is its own category, since a stranded unit has to be swapped rather than repaired. Rebuilding lost programming takes time proportional to how many credentials exist. On HOA controlled properties, coordination adds scheduling rather than parts.
The mistake that costs the most
The biggest mistake is repairing a buried wire splice repeatedly instead of running new cable in conduit. Each repair works for a while and fails again, and the cumulative cost passes the proper fix within a couple of visits. The second is never recording the programming. When a receiver loses its memory or a panel is replaced, an undocumented system has to be rebuilt credential by credential, and on a property with many users that is hours. The third is bypassing an exit loop that has become unreliable, which leaves vehicles unable to leave in a power or radio failure. My gate keypad stopped working. Is the gate broken?
Usually not. Start by establishing whether the gate itself will operate from another credential, a remote or the wall control. If it will, the fault is in the keypad or its wiring rather than the gate. Dead keypads are commonly power, a failed transformer, or a wire that has corroded at a buried splice. All my gate remotes stopped working at once.
When every remote fails together, the receiver is the suspect, not the remotes.
