Which service you actually need

Most people call describing a symptom rather than a service, which is the right way round. A door that has suddenly become extremely heavy and will not lift is a spring. A door that opens fine but will not stay closed, or will not close at all, is usually a sensor rather than an opener. An opener humming without moving the door is usually a stripped drive gear. A door that has dropped on one side or is hanging crooked is a cable, and that one should not be operated at all until somebody has looked at it.

Noise is the least specific symptom and the most useful to describe precisely. A rhythmic clacking through the whole travel points at rollers or hinge pins. A grinding from the top of the door usually means a bearing. A single sharp bang at one point in the travel is often sections binding because the track is out of alignment. None of those mean the door is about to fail tomorrow, and all of them mean something is wearing something else while the noise continues.

Safety, and the parts of a door you should not touch

A torsion spring holds enough stored energy to injure somebody badly, and cables carry the full weight of the door against that spring. Winding bars, a properly secured tube, the correct sequence for releasing tension and knowing what to do when a set screw is seized are the difference between routine work and an accident. The components a homeowner can safely deal with are the bottom weather seal, the photo eye sensors, keeping the track clean and the manual balance test. Everything inboard of that involves stored energy, and there is no version of this where saving a call out charge is worth what can go wrong.

Where the money actually goes

A garage door invoice has three parts and they are worth seeing separately. The part, which on most repairs is the smallest number. The labour, which is the time to open a loaded spring system safely and put it back correctly. And the diagnosis, which is what determines whether the first two were spent on the right thing. A cheap repair aimed at the wrong component is the most expensive outcome available, because you pay for it and then you pay again when the actual cause surfaces. That is the entire reason we look at the whole system before quoting rather than pricing the symptom you described on the phone.

What a quote should contain

It is worth knowing what a complete quote looks like so an incomplete one is recognisable. On a spring it should name the specification being fitted, wire size, inside diameter and length, rather than simply saying a spring, and it should say whether one or both are being replaced on a two spring system. On an opener it should state drive type and whether the existing rail and hardware are being reused. On a new door it should say whether new track and a recalculated spring system are included, because carrying over the old ones is how a new door ends up performing like the old one. And all of it should come after somebody has measured, not before.

Residential and commercial

Both, and they are genuinely different disciplines rather than the same work at different scales. A residential door runs a handful of cycles a day and is specified accordingly. A commercial dock or service bay door can run two hundred, which changes the spring rating, the track gauge, the operator class and the realistic maintenance interval. Fitting residential hardware to a commercial opening because it is cheaper is how a door eventually fails in a way that hurts somebody, so we price and specify commercial work as commercial work.

Straightforward process, no theatre

You call, you describe what the door is doing, and you get an honest read on whether it sounds urgent. If it does, we say so. If it sounds like something you can safely leave until tomorrow, we say that instead, because a same day call out you did not need is money wasted.

On site, the technician inspects the full system before quoting. Garage doors are a set of parts under load working together, and treating one part in isolation is how people end up paying twice. You will be shown what has failed, told what caused it, and given a price before anything is taken apart.

What we carry and what has to be ordered

Common torsion springs across the sizes that dominate residential doors here, cables, drums, bearings, rollers, hinges, brackets, weather seals and the opener drive gears that account for most opener failures are stocked, which is why the majority of calls are finished on the first visit. What has to be ordered is anything door specific: a replacement section for a particular line and colour, a made to size door for a non standard opening, a commercial operator, or a spring specification outside the common range. When that happens you get told honestly what is coming and roughly how long, and the door is made safe and secure in the meantime rather than left in whatever state it failed in.

Diagnosis before pricing, every time

The first fifteen minutes of any visit goes to the system rather than to the part that made the noise. Spring condition and specification against the actual door weight. Cable condition at the bottom bracket on both sides. End bearings and the centre bearing. Roller and hinge wear. Track plumb and alignment against the opening as it exists today, which on a house with a moving slab is not the opening it was built with. Opener force and travel settings, and both safety systems tested rather than assumed. Then you get told what failed, what caused it, what needs doing now and what can reasonably wait.
