What counts as an emergency
A garage door emergency is usually one of three things. The door will not close and your house is open to the street. The door will not open and your vehicle is trapped inside. Or the door has come off its track or dropped and is now unsafe to be under. All three are genuinely urgent and all three have a safe short term action you can take before anyone arrives.
If the door will not close
First check the photo eyes at the bottom of each track. If one indicator light is off or blinking, something is breaking the beam or a sensor has been knocked out of alignment. Clearing the obstruction or realigning the sensor solves this more often than not. If the door still will not close, you can pull the emergency release cord and lower the door manually, then lock it, which secures the house until it can be repaired properly.
If the door will not open
If you heard a bang and now the door will not move, a spring has almost certainly broken. Do not keep pressing the remote, because the opener will burn itself out trying to lift a door it was never meant to lift. Do not try to force it up by hand either, because the full weight is now on you and it can come back down. If the vehicle inside is needed urgently, say so when you call, because it changes how we prioritise.
If the door is off track or has fallen
Keep everyone out from under it. Do not operate the opener. Do not try to pull it back into place. A door in that state is holding weight in a way it was not designed to and it can move suddenly.
What we will tell you honestly
We do not publish a guaranteed arrival time, because traffic across this metro makes any such promise unreliable and we would rather not make one we cannot keep. When you call we will tell you where the nearest technician actually is and what that realistically means for your address. If someone else can get there sooner, we will say so.

Safety note. Never stand or walk under a door that is off track, has a broken spring, or has dropped. Never attempt to release spring tension without the correct winding bars.
What counts as an emergency and what does not
Being honest about this saves people money. A snapped spring with a car inside is disruptive but not dangerous, provided nobody tries to force the door and nobody keeps pressing the opener button, which strips the drive gear on a door with no counterbalance. That will usually keep safely until a scheduled visit. A door that will not close is a security problem and is worth resolving the same day. A frayed cable, a door hanging visibly crooked, or a door partly off the track is a safety issue and should not be operated at all, because those failures can drop the door without warning. When you call, you get told which of those three categories you are in before anybody talks about money, and if it will genuinely keep until morning at a lower cost, you will hear that.
What to do in the first ten minutes
Stop using the opener. That single instruction prevents most of the secondary damage we see, because an opener asked to lift a door with a broken spring or a jammed track will strip its gear, bend the rail or pull its own mounts loose within a few attempts. Pull the emergency release cord so the opener disengages from the door. Do not attempt to lift a door whose spring has broken, because it now weighs its full unassisted weight and it can come down hard. If the door is open and will not close, and the property needs securing, say so when you call because that changes the priority. Photographs of the springs, the cables at the bottom bracket and the opener label help identify the failure and confirm the parts are on the vehicle before anybody sets out.
Insulation, and what it does and does not do
An insulated door reduces heat transfer through the door skin, and where the garage adjoins conditioned living space that produces a comfort improvement in the adjoining room that people genuinely notice. On a detached garage it does very little that matters. That is the honest boundary of the benefit, and describing it as a utility bill saving is overstating something that is already worth having for a better reason.
What insulation does not fix is noise, which is a hardware and opener question resolved by nylon rollers, a belt drive and isolated rail hangers. People buy expensive insulated doors expecting quiet and are disappointed, and that is a preventable disappointment. Being clear about which problem you are solving decides which product is right.

What is the difference between chain and belt drive?
Mechanically they do the same job. A chain drive uses a metal chain and is less expensive and slightly noisier. A belt drive uses a reinforced rubber belt and is noticeably quieter, which matters when there is a bedroom above or beside the garage. Both are reliable. The choice is mostly about noise tolerance and budget.
My door is crooked and stuck. What should I do?
Stop using the opener and keep people out from under it. A crooked, jammed door usually means a cable has broken or come off its drum, and the door is now holding its weight in a way it was not designed to. Forcing it, either with the opener or by hand, is how bottom sections get bent and how people get hurt.
How often should a garage door be serviced?
Once a year is sensible for a typical household, more often for a door cycling many times a day. Real service means checking balance by hand, testing both safety reversal systems, retorquing fasteners, cleaning track and lubricating the correct points. It is not spraying the whole assembly with oil, which collects dust and makes wear worse.
Can a dented section be replaced without a new door?
Often yes, if the rest of the door is sound and the model is still available or has a current equivalent. The complication is colour match, because the existing sections have faded and a new one has not. On white doors the difference is usually acceptable, on coloured or wood grain finishes it frequently is not.
Does a broken spring mean I need a new door?
No. A broken spring is a wear part reaching the end of its rated life and it says nothing about the condition of the door itself. Plenty of doors go through two or three sets of springs across their service life. The door needs replacing when the sections themselves fail, not when the hardware does.
Why does my opener run but the door does not move?
Usually a stripped drive gear inside the opener housing, which is a repair rather than a replacement on most units. The other common cause is that the emergency release has been pulled, disconnecting the trolley from the door. Check the release first, it costs nothing and it solves this more often than people expect.
